What we do

At Stoneferry we follow the English programmes of study from the National Curriculum. We teach English through focused basic skills lessons and cross curricularly in all subjects. Our teaching of English focuses sessions on:

  • phonics & spelling
  • grammar, punctuation
  • handwriting
  • dictionary skills
  • guided reading
  • features of different writing genres
  • speaking and listening

Writing skills are taught through cross curricular themes. This means that children are exposed to several different genres on a regular basis and writing has a clear purpose (often related to real life experiences).

Each week all children will take part in at least one reciprocal guided reading session. Children are grouped together according to their reading ability and they work with a member of staff on a structured reading lesson. Observations of children are made during these sessions and are recorded.
